RURAL INNOVATION CENTRE HIGHLIGHT
John Reid from Colibri Software
“Go for it. You’re probably in your 20’s, so why not? If you’re self-motivated and have a lot of drive then there are all sorts of opportunities.”
Tell me a little about your business and what role you play in its operations.
So we started 5 years ago, and we’ve developed one product and we’re looking at looking at developing a second product in the area of energy monitoring. The first product was Strollopia, and it has had a number of sales so we will look to continue marketing that.
WHy did you choose to operate your business out of the annapolis valley?
Well, because I lived here! But the reason I lived here was because of the rural nature of the area and of course Acadia. Before I lived here I lived in Colorado.
What is your favorite part about the Rural Innovation Centre?
I think the support that it offers new businesses. There’s a community here, it’s a small community, but nonetheless. I like the proximity to Acadia, the proximity to students, and the support you can get through the university.
What piece of advice would you give to students who are looking to get into entrepreneurship?
Go for it. You’re probably in your 20’s, so why not? If you’re self-motivated and have a lot of drive then there are all sorts of opportunities.
What’s an interesting fact about your business or something cool you are working on?
Over the last 5 years we’ve employed probably over 25-30 different students. We’ve run projects with companies and academic departments here, in Toronto, and Texas. So we’ve done a lot of collaborative work and given students a lot of opportunities.
